Did you know, in a lifetime, the average American will throw away 600 times his or her adult weight in garbage. This means that each adult will leave a legacy of 90,000 lbs. of trash for his or her children. I don't think that is the kind of legacy I want to leave for my child!
Over the past couple of years, I have been on a personal "awakening" of sorts. I have to say, it is probably because I am a mom. Any mother or father will tell you, when you become a parent you really start to look at the future a bit differently.
I remember when I was young, my mom would always ask my brothers and I to pick up the mess we had made before leaving a relatives/friends house. When we would tell her it was clean, she would ALWAYS follow up with "Is it cleaner than when we got here?". It never was and we would march back and fix the mess we had left. With this scenario in mind, I thought about it with a much broader scope. Are we going to leave this earth better than when we got here? What are we teaching the next generation? Are we doing all we can to make sure our kids and grandkids will have the same things that we have now? Is Global Warming really something that "I" am contributing to? Is there something more I can do?
My focus then became: I will find a way, that is within my means, to be apart of the solution. We now recycle everything we can and RecycleAledo.com was born.
